Lost hunters, souls looking for identity and an old man guide us through the remnants of an ancient civilization, touched by the West and thus changed forever. While a generation is on the brink of extinction, another one is emerging.
Greenland and its future belong to those who will stay, even though staying means facing a history of violence, a present of pandemic or a future in a Red House.

Nella Groenlandia orientale un’intera generazione è sull’orlo dell’estinzione mentre un’altra sta nascendo. LA CASA ROSSA racconta la storia della vita dell’avventuriero italiano Robert Peroni che in Groenlandia ha dato un nuovo significato alla sua vita aiutando l’ultimo popolo di cacciatori in Europa. Le pelli e la carne di foca non possono più essere commercializzate, per questo i cacciatori hanno perso la loro unica fonte di sostentamento. I danesi hanno voluto dare a tutti i groenlandesi le loro stesse opportunità di istruzione e assistenza sanitaria. Perciò le famiglie di cacciatori sono state trasferite in nuovi villaggi all’interno di case fisse. Ma hanno dovuto abbandonare la loro vita da seminomadi. Negli ultimi anni, tutto ciò ha portato ad un aumento dei tassi di alcolismo, depressione e suicidio. Inoltre alcuni modelli comportamentali sono ancora impressi nella mente delle persone e sono difficili da eradicare. Tra questi l’abuso sui bambini così come l’alto tasso di suicidio tra i giovani. Ad inserirsi in questa storia, in cui tutti sembrano aver agito per il bene ma in cui tutti sembrano aver fallito, c’è Robert Peroni. Diventato famoso come esploratore estremo negli anni Ottanta, ha esplorato i limiti delle prestazioni umane. Peroni è stato il primo ad attraversare a piedi lo strato di ghiaccio della Groenlandia nel suo punto più largo. Durante questa spedizione, si innamora della Groenlandia e della sua gente. Decide quindi di abbandonare la caccia alla fama e al denaro e si trasferisce qui con una nuova missione: salvare dall’estinzione l’ultimo popolo di cacciatori d’Europa. A Tasiilaq, 2000 abitanti, il più grande insediamento della Groenlandia orientale, Robert ha fondato nel 1994 la Casa Rossa, che è sia un bed & breakfast per gli stranieri che un rifugio per la gente del posto che si trova in difficoltà. I giovani in particolare vengono alla Casa Rossa quando non trovano una via d’uscita dai loro problemi, tra cui la 17enne Laila, che ha subito abusi da bambina, e la 25enne Illanguaq. Ogni famiglia ha delle vittime da piangere, specialmente nella Groenlandia orientale, dove l’inverno è particolarmente lungo quanto la natura particolarmente bella. Robert Peroni vuole offrire un futuro a questo popolo adottando un modello di turismo sostenibile che ha ereditato dalla sua terra natìa, l’Alto Adige. Peroni è convinto che non solo la gente del posto ne beneficerà, ma anche i suoi ospiti: “Possiamo imparare più noi dagli Inuit che loro da noi”.
SYNOPSIS
In eastern Greenland an entire generation is on the brink of extinction while another is being born. THE RED HOUSE tells the story of the life of the Italian adventurer Robert Peroni who in Greenland gave a new meaning to his life by helping the last population of hunters in Europe. Seal skins and meat can no longer be traded, so hunters have lost their only source of livelihood. The Danes wanted to give all Greenlanders the same opportunities for education and healthcare as they did. Therefore the hunting families were moved to new villages within permanent houses. But they had to abandon their life as semi-nomads. In recent years, this has led to increased rates of alcoholism, depression and suicide. Furthermore, some behavioral patterns are still imprinted in people’s minds and are difficult to eradicate. These include child abuse as well as the high suicide rate among young people. Entering into this story, in which everyone seems to have acted for the good but in which everyone seems to have failed, is Robert Peroni. Having risen to fame as an extreme explorer in the 1980s, he explored the limits of human performance. Peroni was the first to cross the Greenland ice sheet on foot at its widest point. During this expedition, he falls in love with Greenland and its people. He therefore decides to abandon the hunt for fame and money and moves here with a new mission: to save the last hunting population of Europe from extinction. In Tasiilaq, population 2000, the largest settlement in eastern Greenland, Robert founded the Red House in 1994, which is both a bed & breakfast for foreigners and a refuge for locals in difficulty. Young people in particular come to the Red House when they can’t find a way out of their problems, including 17-year-old Laila, who was abused as a child, and 25-year-old Illanguaq. Every family has victims to mourn, especially in eastern Greenland, where the winter is particularly long and the nature is particularly beautiful. Robert Peroni wants to offer a future to these people by adopting a model of sustainable tourism that he inherited from his homeland, Alto Adige. Peroni is convinced that not only the locals will benefit, but also his guests: “We can learn more from the Inuit than they from us”.
